Best time to cycle Austria

May to September on the Danube, with late August and September the calmest: warm water-level air, harvest light in the Wachau, and the summer flotilla thinning out day by day.

Month by month

November – MarchCold
Frost, fog in the valley and many riverside guesthouses closed.
April – MayGood
Cool, green, very quiet. Some rain and higher water.
June – JulyBusy
Warm and settled, and the path is at its most crowded.
August – SeptemberBest
Long warm evenings, vineyard harvest, and steadily emptier mornings.

Daylight

Around sixteen hours in midsummer, still fourteen in late August. Riding before nine gives you the path almost alone.

Wind

Generally light and often westerly, which is why the classic direction is downstream, west to east.

Roads and surfaces

Sealed and traffic-free for most of its length, with short gravel sections on the quieter bank.
