Best time to cycle Sweden

Late May to early September on Gotland. August is the quietest good month: the sea is at its warmest, the island empties after the Swedish holiday weeks, and the light stretches well past nine.

Month by month

November – MarchCold
Short grey days, cold Baltic wind, most island lodging closed.
April – MayFresh
Bright and very quiet; the sea is still cold and nights near freezing.
June – JulyBusy
Peak Swedish holiday season, warm and social, ferries fully booked.
AugustBest
Warm sea, long low light, empty gravel roads once the holidays end.

Daylight

Eighteen hours at midsummer, around fifteen in August, with a long soft dusk that makes evening riding easy.

Wind

The Baltic is open water — expect a steady coastal wind and plan the loop so the exposed shore comes with it behind you.

Roads and surfaces

Smooth minor roads with long, well-kept gravel sections inland.
